Eero Saarinen is well known for his design of the Pedestal Series, which includes a very hard-to-find piece, this ashtray. In the 1950s, Saarinen developed the pedestal form during his research for a competition announced by M.O.M.A. (The Museum of Modern Art) that was looking for an “organic design in home furnishing collection,” in which Eero Saarinen participated along with Charles Eames. Through this competition, his most famous style was born. Saarinen designed this pedestal ashtray in accordance with his tulip series. It is one of the only accessories that was ever put into mass production designed by Saarinen.
Saarinen’s Tulip Ashtray would go onto be used at the famous TWA Terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport, a building that was designed by Saarinen. This ashtray can also be seen in various scenes of AMC’s popular television show “Mad Men”.
