The Michael Thonet No. 20 Bentwood Chair is widely used in cafes, restaurants, offices, and homes due to its aesthetic appeal and increased comfort from the upholstered ring in the back.

The late 19th century saw an international marketing effort for Michael Thonet’s bentwood chairs that included retail locations in the world’s largest business centers.  The first retail shop was opened in Vienna, but by 1890 there were locations in  New York, Berlin, Milan, Chicago, Moscow, and even Algiers.  Multi-lingual catalogs served these locations with a well-thought-out system of numbers for chairs and finishes.  The catalogs were highly graphical exhibiting the massive array of bentwood furniture being created.  These historical bentwood chair catalogs give us an insight into the origination of the B20 bentwood armchair as well as other Michael Thonet designs.
